How did So Happy to Learn come to life?
Twenty years ago, Mrs. Brown was working in a classroom when she became frustrated with the lack of success she was witnessing among the students with Down syndrome…
Welcome to the So Happy to Learn!
I am so happy you are here and I will do my best to provide you with as much information as I can so you can duplicate the success I have enjoyed with hundreds of learners over the past twenty years.
Making an online program has been challenging, to say the least, as I need to convey so much information through words and videos alone. Each learner and family are unique and at different places of the learning process. The idea for this online outreach program was created after a mom saw some of my learners reading on YouTube and contacted me asking for guidance. I started mentoring a few families online and we had so much success we wanted to make this program available worldwide.
Getting the entire program online has really been a work in progress for many years and a true labor of love. I love sharing the program I have created because it works so well and nothing makes me happier than seeing learners learn and love the process!
It is my sincerest hope that I can provide you with enough information so that you will have success at home with your learner!
…Taking it upon herself to find a better way, she read Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome by Patricia Oelwein. A masterpiece of literature when it comes to educating children with learning disabilities, this book became the foundation of So Happy to Learn. Beginning with three students in her living room, the So Happy to Learn family now includes hundreds of learners.
What does it look like today?
So Happy to Learn is NOT your standard curriculum. So Happy to Learn IS a philosophy; a change of mindset, a paradigm shift from traditional teaching. It IS a series of techniques, approaches, and simple tools to instill a love of reading, writing and math in your learner. It IS a revolutionary teaching program for both special and typical learners alike.
While the program started exclusively to teach children with Down syndrome, it’s being quickly embraced by the autism community. It can also help children with a wide array of learning challenges and can even help give your typical preschooler a head-start. The program can be implemented by moms, educators and everyone in between. You don’t need a teaching degree to tap into your learner’s abilities; in fact, teachers are going to have to work hard to change their ways from testing to focusing solely on teaching!
Step-by-step instructions with detailed information are provided for each aspect of the program. Extensive libraries of tutorial videos are in place to help So Happy to Learn teachers. A large archive of Happy Sheet packets (worksheets) is also available for the Beginner, Level 1 and Level 2. In addition, new packets are uploaded each month to provide fresh and relevant content for your learner.
The primary goals of So Happy to Learn are that the learner will:
-read and enjoy reading,
-write and enjoy writing,
– understand and enjoy using basic math concepts.
Most importantly… the learner will enjoy learning!
So Happy to Learn has already changed the lives of hundreds of learners — and those who love them — that have accessed the program at Mrs. Brown’s house. But don’t take our word for it; check out our Testimonials page and see what’s being said. We know that by bringing this program online, thousands upon thousands of children stand to have their lives forever changed.
